The Skills That Got You Hired Are the Ones Automated First

You built your reputation on a Search Terms Report. Six hours a week mining negative keywords, tuning Enhanced CPC multipliers by device and location, splitting ad sets down to a single interest layer. That grind got you promoted from executive to manager. It’s the line item on your résumé that made a hiring manager stop scrolling. Open your Google Ads account today and most of that lever no longer exists. Not shrinking — gone. The platform didn’t come for your job. It came for the exact tasks that built your case for having one.

What actually changed, and when

This isn’t a slow drift. It’s a series of hard cutovers, each one closing a lever a whole cohort of performance marketers built a career around.

Google retired Enhanced CPC for Search and Display campaigns effective the week of 31 March 2025 — the bidding strategy that trained a generation of PPC hires on manual multiplier logic. Unmigrated campaigns default to plain Manual CPC, which Google no longer recommends to anyone. Manual bidding still technically works. It’s just no longer where the platform points new accounts.

Performance Max absorbed the rest. Third-party survey aggregation puts advertiser usage climbing from roughly 60% in 2024 to about 71% in 2025, and Google reports over 1 million advertisers globally now run it. Meta moved just as fast: Advantage+ crossed roughly 80% adoption among ecommerce advertisers by mid-2025, and in April 2026 Meta cut the minimum weekly-conversions threshold for Advantage+ Shopping from 50 to 25, pulling smaller D2C accounts out of manual campaign types entirely.

“An advertiser simply supplying ‘campaign objectives and financial details,’ with Meta’s systems ‘handling everything from asset creation to personalization and targeting.'” Mark Zuckerberg, Meta Q3 2025 earnings call

Meta’s own leadership has said out loud what the roadmap has quietly implied for years, on the Q3 2025 earnings call. That’s not a feature update. That’s a stated intention to own the entire campaign-construction layer — the layer most performance marketing job descriptions were built around.

The number that should actually worry you — and the one that shouldn’t

Here’s the part most takes on this get backwards. The scary framing is “AI is taking performance marketing jobs.” The Indian data says the opposite in headline terms: marketing-sector fresher hiring jumped from an 11% share of hiring activity in H1 2025 to 62% in H1 2026, per TeamLease EdTech. Nobody is deleting this function.

What’s actually happening is quieter and more specific: the job is being re-specified under new names. The fastest-growing titles are Digital Campaign Analyst, AI Marketing Associate, Ads Operations Executive and Market Research Assistant — not “PPC Executive,” not “Media Buyer.” Regionally this is already visible: Pune shows 51% demand concentration for Ads Operations Executive roles, Hyderabad 47% for Digital Campaign Analyst roles. If you’re hiring — or being hired — in either city, the job posting your CV needs to match has already changed its vocabulary.

A word of caution on scale here: the widely-quoted global figure of 92 million roles displaced against 170 million created by 2030 comes from the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025. That number spans every sector and every country through 2030.

That number is not a performance-marketing number and it is not an India number. Use the TeamLease figures for your actual situation — they’re the ones with your name on them.

What this costs you, in hours and rupees

Run the arithmetic on your own week. If you’re still spending 6–8 hours mining Search Terms Reports for negative-keyword lists on a ₹40 lakh/month account, that’s close to a full working day producing a skill the platform now performs by default, inside Performance Max, without being asked. At a loaded cost of even ₹800/hour for a mid-level executive, that’s roughly ₹25,000–₹27,000 a month spent maintaining a lever the account no longer needs pulled by hand.

The headcount pattern shows up at the team level too. A brand running ₹1.5 Cr/month on Meta, structured the old way, might staff three people each running manual ad sets by audience segment. Structured around Advantage+ signal quality and creative testing cadence, the same spend plausibly needs one senior person and a clear feed-health process. Trade coverage has floated a comparable pattern elsewhere in the industry — a paid-media team moving from four people on $5M spend to two people on $7M spend. That’s a vendor-reported anecdote, not an audited case study, and it should be read as illustrative of a direction, not as a verified statistic. But the direction lines up with everything above: spend is not the constraint anymore. Headcount doing manual construction is.

The task that built your résumé, then vs. now
Task that built your résumé 2019–2023 version 2026 reality
Keyword research Manual mining of Search Terms Reports, exact-match ad groups Broad match feeding Performance Max; skill is data hygiene, not list-building
Bid management Manual/Enhanced CPC multipliers by device, location, time Enhanced CPC retired March 2025; Smart Bidding is the default entry point
Audience segmentation Ad sets split by micro-interest layers Advantage+ audience expansion by default on most Sales campaigns
RSA/creative copy Hand-written, manually A/B tested variants Platform drafts and rotates variants; skill is quality control and prompt direction
Budget pacing Manual daily adjustments per campaign Automated pacing within Smart Bidding targets

The task-automation audit

The self-audit ASVS gives every performance marketer who asks “is my job at risk”: stop asking about the job title. Start auditing the ten tasks actually on your weekly calendar. Score each one honestly.

Count how many of your ten land on “platform now does this by default.” If it’s three or more, your day-to-day is still built around 2021’s job description. The four items marked “human judgment required” are the ones worth building your next twelve months around — not because they’re trendy, but because no deprecation notice has come for them yet.

Which of your tasks are exposed
Task type Automation exposure What replaces the manual version
Manual bidding, keyword lists, audience splitting High — already automated Smart Bidding, Performance Max, Advantage+ default settings
RSA copywriting, basic creative variants Medium — platform drafts, human edits Generative ad tools inside Google/Meta, human as editor not author
Feed/catalog QA, pacing checks Medium — tools flag, human confirms Automated alerts plus manual root-cause diagnosis
Signal quality, first-party data architecture Low — not automated yet No platform substitute; this is the growing skill demand
Cross-channel allocation, incrementality reads Low — not automated yet Requires judgment across accounts the platform can’t see together
Anomaly diagnosis when automation optimizes wrong Low — not automated yet Requires knowing what “wrong” looks like before the dashboard shows it
Automation-Exposure Score 0/100

0/100 — tick the tasks you still do by hand each week to see your exposure.

The decision rule for what to do next

Don’t try to defend every manual skill at once. Use one rule: if a task appears as a default toggle in Performance Max or Advantage+ campaign setup, stop treating it as a specialist skill and start treating it as a quality-control checkpoint. If a task requires judgment the platform has no visibility into — which conversion signals are actually high-intent, whether a creative concept will hold up past week two, why a cross-channel budget split makes sense this quarter and not last quarter — that’s where to spend the hours you just freed up.

Practically, that means: stop listing “manual bid management” or “keyword research” as a core competency on your résumé or your team’s job description. Start documenting first-party data mapping, creative testing frameworks, and anomaly diagnosis instead. Those are the skills behind the titles that are actually hiring right now.

Questions worth answering

The clearest India-specific data says no, not in headline terms. Marketing-sector fresher hiring rose from an 11% share of hiring activity in H1 2025 to 62% in H1 2026, per TeamLease EdTech. What’s changing is the shape of the job, not its existence — the fastest-growing titles are Digital Campaign Analyst, AI Marketing Associate and Ads Operations Executive, not classic PPC roles.

Google’s own documentation frames it as consolidating advertisers onto Smart Bidding, which uses far more real-time auction signals than a manual multiplier ever could. It became effective the week of 31 March 2025. Unmigrated campaigns fall back to plain Manual CPC, which Google actively steers new and existing accounts away from.

No — fighting the tools by over-restricting inputs just produces worse account performance while doing nothing to protect your role. The valuable move is feeding these systems clean conversion data and catching when they drift toward low-intent traffic, not avoiding them.

Lead with first-party data mapping, creative testing frameworks, feed and catalog health, cross-channel budget allocation logic, and anomaly diagnosis on automated bidding. These map directly to the titles currently hiring fastest in Indian markets — Ads Operations Executive, Digital Campaign Analyst, AI Marketing Associate.

Directionally plausible, not independently verified. The specific case numbers circulating in industry content — team size cut in half while spend grows — trace back to vendor and agency blog posts, not audited disclosures. Treat the pattern as illustrative of where headcount allocation is heading, not as a benchmark to hit.

Enhanced CPC went from active recommendation to fully retired inside one deprecation cycle, not a gradual multi-year fade. Advantage+’s minimum threshold dropped again as recently as April 2026. Treat the next two quarters as the window to shift what you spend your week on, not a future problem.

Your ad account runs on automation now. Does your visual strategy?

The platform is running your bids, your audiences, and half your creative rotation already. Your visual identity is the one lever it still can’t automate for you.

Advait Sontakke, commercial photographer and brand director based in Mumbai, writes about performance marketing careers under AI automation. This post covers why the manual skills that built a performance marketer’s early career — Enhanced CPC bid multipliers, exact-match keyword building, ad-set audience micro-segmentation — have been automated by Google’s Performance Max and Meta’s Advantage+, including Enhanced CPC’s formal retirement the week of 31 March 2025, Performance Max adoption reaching roughly 71% of advertisers and over 1 million advertisers globally, and Meta Advantage+ crossing 80% ecommerce adoption by mid-2025. It also covers the counter-intuitive Indian labor-market data from TeamLease EdTech showing marketing-sector fresher hiring share rising from 11% to 62% between H1 2025 and H1 2026, with fast-growing new titles including Digital Campaign Analyst, AI Marketing Associate and Ads Operations Executive concentrated in cities like Pune and Hyderabad. Includes a ten-task self-audit checklist, a live automation-exposure scoring tool, and a risk matrix mapping which performance-marketing tasks are already automated versus which still require human judgment.
